For the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP), I helped teach English grammar, creative writing, and poetry to high school “learners,” as they are called in South Africa. The several high schools that receive funding from the NGO are located in “township” neighborhoods such as Philippi, Khayelitsha, Samora-Machel, and Mitchell’s Plain. I also took learners on a weeklong “winter” camping trip to West Coast National Park, about one hour north of Cape Town in Langebaan. I taught the urban-dwelling learners how to use outdoor equipment, as they had never been in camping situations before. I taught them a “tent pitching” seminar, taught them how to use water filters, and showed them essentials to bring along in their camping backpacks. When not spending time with SAEP, I spent time in my neighborhood (Observatory “Obs”) enjoying the World Cup 2010 atmosphere, went with friends on a road trip to Lesotho, did the “Garden Route,” shopped at “Mr. Price,” and hiked the Table Mountain National Park trails– Lion’s Head was a favorite.
