Roasted Sweet Potato and Turnip Fries

While visiting our cousins Mike and Cotton this past week at their new home in San Antonio, they pulled these stunning turnips out from their organic backyard garden, which inspired me to make my favorite side dish for their “soup party.”

This is the easiest thing to throw together if you have unexpected company or have a main course that feels like it needs to be rounded out with a hearty side dish.

Here, I chopped up one large sweet potato and one large turnip. You can eat the turnip skin apparently, which leaves a nice bit of purple to add color to your tray. I shook the pieces up in a mixing bowl with:

2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or chili powder
1/2 tsp paprika
sea salt to taste
garlic powder is good sometimes in here, depending on your mood

OK, I’m lying here. I don’t actually ever measure anything. So those numbers there are totally fudged. You just shake a bunch of spices into the fries until they taste good!

Bake on a baking sheet (I cover with tin foil) at 450 degrees for 20 – 30 minutes. They come out better if you flip them over / move them around about halfway through.

Avocado lime dip:

1 whole avocado, pitted
5 sprigs cilantro, save some for garnish
juice from an entire lime
sea salt to taste
cayenne pepper or chili powder, whatever you have
again, garlic powder can be cool here sometimes, too

Pulse in the blender. If it is too sticky, sometimes I add in 2 tbsp of melted coconut oil. With this recipe in the back pocket, you’ll be ready for visitors at a moment’s notice.

*I originally got the inspiration to make both of these recipes from the amazing Spinach 4 Breakfast healthy cooking blog back when I committed to a gluten-free diet over a year ago. I learned both recipes from Alyssa and Maria, and now that I’m comfortable around the kitchen, I can make these up on the spot, though the measurements are probably slightly different each time!
