Hippie Lane: the app that saved my dessert life

Nov. 1, 2014 was a huge day. My dear friends Kay and Dan got married, and I had the honor of presiding over their wedding ceremony! Earlier that morning, I vowed to make Nov. 1 a big day for myself as well. I woke up feeling exhausted and bloated, like most days. I decided it was a great day to go gluten-free and dairy-free, cold turkey! No problem!

Bride and groom were gorgeous, and so was their wedding at Forest Hill Club in SF

As I got dressed for the wedding, I thought about what I would eat that evening. Luckily for me, Kay served fresh greens, filet mignon, and quinoa salad! I felt great! When they served the cake, I passed. I believed that by going gluten and dairy-free, I had resigned myself to a life of no treats, which was a little sad, after a lifetime of being referred to as “the Chocolate Monster.”

I. WAS. WRONG.

Instagram exposed me to a wealth of healthy desserts, and today I’m excited to tell you all about Hippie Lane. Taline Gabriel is the well-dressed mastermind behind her “treats with edge.”

After drooling over her Instagram account @talinegabriel, I downloaded her recipe app for $3.90 from the app store. She had a version for Android, so I was all set.

OK, I was all ready to get cooking, but then I realized I didn’t have any of the necessary ingredients.

My pantry consisted of all of this processed stuff:

And to make Taline’s recipes, it needed to look more like this:

acai powder, Madagascar vanilla, almond meal, green tea, coconut oil, brown rice syrup, shredded coconut, raw cashews, coconut flour

A trip to Whole Foods and a lot of conversations with the staff there, along with research on my own, helped me figure out the ingredients I needed to make healthy snacks.

Here are my top 3 successes so far with Hippie Lane app!

Acai and Green Tea tartlets

While making the acai and green tea tartlets, I employed some new techniques. For example, I soaked cashews overnight in a green-tea infusion.

Then I squeezed lemon juice while keeping out the seeds! Brilliant!

Did I mention all the treats on the app are RAW? So you don’t have to get your kitchen and house all hot, because you’re not heating up the oven!

Peppermint Chocolate Bars

Ironically I used too many mint leaves, so the taste came out too strong. Next time I’ll cut back. How beautiful is that green?! I always thought green was my favorite color because I am outdoorsy, but now I realize it’s because it’s the beautiful color of mint chip!

Neapolitan Chia Pudding

This was my first time ever making chia pudding. I never tried it, because for whatever reason I assumed it was complicated. I was wrong. Really it’s just a matter of soaking the chia seeds in the right proportion.

I know you want the deets, but you have to buy the app! In the meantime, reassess your cupboards, remove the white sugars and starches, and make way for Hippie Lane ingredients! Then get ready to have some fun!

PS I was eating one of those gorgeous Neapolitan chia puddings the whole time while writing this post!
PPS Thanks to Hippie Lane app, I still get to be the Chocolate Monster, only healthier.
