Paulina, my “host sister,” took me one afternoon to Vitacura (northeastern Santiago) to indulge my photo-taking obsession with my new Canon Rebel t5i.

This fairly new park in the ritzy Vitacura neighborhood boasts an amazing view of “Sanhattan”- two new towers reminiscent of the New York skyline.

The park is very well known for this cool bicyclist metal sculpture:

You can enjoy a view of the gorgeous Andes from pretty much anywhere in Santiago. The locals tell me they don’t even notice the mountains anymore, but for me, everywhere I went I felt the menacing presence of the enormous mountains:

In the above picture you can see the omnipresent winter pollution in Santiago. The smog gets trapped in the valley of Santiago between the Andes range and the coastal range. It clears up better in other seasons of the year.

On our way out of the park, we ran into my student Eva, who’s host family coincidentally also took her there on that Saturday afternoon.

We all loved getting to enjoy every-day life in Santiago with our host families.
